Smokin' Aces gets a prequel
It's prequel time again, and this one is for Smokin' Aces. The director of the first film, has updated his blog with news that he is to make another film.
I guess considering how the first film panned out, a sequel would be difficult. But I'm not sure that a prequel is needed.
Joe Carnahan directed Smokin' Aces (Filmstalker review) with a great cast, including Ray Liotta, Ryan Reynolds, Jeremy Piven and Andy Garcia. Piven played Buddy Israel, a Las Vegas illusionist, who is in over his head with the Mafia. After agreeing to snitch to the FBI to save himself, a Mafia boss puts a price on Israel's head. This leads to alot of people dying, and a whole lot of action.
Now Carnahan has posted a short message on his blog, saying that a prequel has been agreed to. It comes from smokinjoecarnahan, through Cinema Blend.
Finally, some actual 'Smokin Aces' news. Universal has officially greenlit the prequel and we are underway. Cameos will abound. Trust me.
I guess that stems from the large cast of the first, with even Matthew Fox making an appearance. I really like Smokin' Aces, a great cast, a good plot and a lot of violence. And what an ending. Not sure how much a prequel will add, will it tell the story of how Israel ended up in that predicament? If so, I think they definitely need Piven back.
Are you happy about a Smokin' Aces prequel? Or is it doomed alongside so many prequels/sequels?
