No Forrest Gump II after 9/11
Any news on Forrest Gump II has been slow going, and has dried up a bit recently. The last we heard was the usual thing, there was a script and some rumours of movement.
But now the screenwriter behind the original, and the man who wrote the sequel, has explained why nothing has been happening.
In March last year, we heard that there might be some movement on Forrest Gump II (whether we wanted it or not). Paramount had asked Eric Roth to write the sequel, based on the second novel. With a legal tiff between the author of the books and Paramount sorted, rumours turned to Tom Hanks and whether he would star or not.
However no sequel has ever emerged, and /Film asked Roth why not.
I turned in my version of the Forrest Gump sequel, or Part II, whatever you call it… It’s a continuation really — I want to start the movie literally two minutes after the end of the last one, with him on the bus bench waiting for his son to get home from school. But I turned in the script the night before 9/11. And we sat down, Tom [Hanks] and Bob [Zemeckis] and I, looked at each other and said, we don’t think this is relevant anymore. The world had changed. Now time has obviously passed, but maybe some things should just be one thing and left as they are.
I didn't mind the first, but a sequel has never particularly interested me. It's interesting that it hasn't come to anything in the years since 9/11. Maybe all parties have kind of lost interest. Have you? Or do you want to see Forrest Gump II? Is the world ready for more?
