Screen Actors Guilds Awards Nominations 2008

SAGAward.jpgThe nominations have arrived for the Screen Actors Guild Awards 2008, and amazingly they've managed to stay out of striking to keep the list together - oh did you not know that they're STILL talking about striking? Talk about indecisive. I think they lost their leverage about six months ago.

Anyway the nominations are here and they read rather well with a few nominations that really surprise and cheeer me up - but then they probably have to nominate all their big members to keep them onside for the strike in 2010.

MOVIES
Outstanding Performance by a Male Actor in a Leading Role
RICHARD JENKINS / Walter Vale - "THE VISITOR" (Overture Films)
FRANK LANGELLA / Richard Nixon - "FROST/NIXON" (Universal Pictures)
SEAN PENN / Harvey Milk - "MILK" (Focus Features)
BRAD PITT / Benjamin Button - "THE CURIOUS CASE OF BENJAMIN BUTTON" (Paramount Pictures)
MICKEY ROURKE / Randy - "THE WRESTLER" (Fox Searchlight Pictures)

Great to see Richard Jenkins getting a nomination for The Visitor (Filmstalker review), that's a wonderful film and one I truly enjoyed. He does give a great performance and it's worth seeing. This is a pretty well rounded role and I don't think you could argue with these nominations.

WIth the female nominations I have to say I'm surprised at a few of them, but the Meryl Streep and Kate Winslet nominations are ones that will prove popular throughout awards season.

Outstanding Performance by a Female Actor in a Leading Role
ANNE HATHAWAY / Kym - "RACHEL GETTING MARRIED" (Sony Pictures Classics)
ANGELINA JOLIE / Christine Collins - "CHANGELING" (Universal Pictures)
MELISSA LEO / Ray Eddy - "FROZEN RIVER" (Sony Pictures Classics)
MERYL STREEP / Sister Aloysius Beauvier - "DOUBT" (Miramax Films)
KATE WINSLET / April Wheeler - "REVOLUTIONARY ROAD" (Paramount Vantage)

Outstanding Performance by a Male Actor in a Supporting Role
JOSH BROLIN / Dan White - "MILK" (Focus Features)
ROBERT DOWNEY, JR. / Kirk Lazarus - "TROPIC THUNDER" (Paramount Pictures)
PHILIP SEYMOUR HOFFMAN / Father Brendan Flynn - "DOUBT" (Miramax Films)
HEATH LEDGER / Joker - "THE DARK KNIGHT" (Warner Bros. Pictures)
DEV PATEL / Older Jamal - "SLUMDOG MILLIONAIRE" (Fox Searchlight Pictures)

Now that I've seen Slumdog Millionaire I have to say that I'm not convinced that Dev Patel deserves an award for the performance, the younger actors have much better roles and give far more.

I'd also ask where Michael Sheen fits into all this, or does Frank Langella get an automatic boost up since he's playing a real life American? Is Sheen's performance not even worthy of supporting?

Wow, and Winslet's up again for supporting, as is Doubt...twice.

Outstanding Performance by a Female Actor in a Supporting Role
AMY ADAMS / Sister James - "DOUBT" (Miramax Flms)
PENÉLOPE CRUZ / Maria Elena - "VICKY CRISTINA BARCELONA" (The Weinstein Company)

Outstanding Performance by a Cast in a Motion Picture
DOUBT (Miramax)
FROST/NIXON (Universal Pictures)

It's amusing that none of these films are yet to be seen in the UK.

Right television land. Insert standard personal television rant here - where's The Shield and Battlestar Galactica? Where's NCIS which continues to grow an audience in its umpteenth series and successfully handing over a major cast member early on? The Shield should have been in here.

Screen Actors Guild Awards 45th Annual Life Achievement Award
James Earl Jones

That is a worthy nomination for James Earl Jones, even if just for his voice!

Oh, I do find it funny that the Screen Actors Guild Awards spells SAGA - the tour group for the more mature.

Anything that particularly stands out for you?
