Smith talks I Am Legend prequel
I enjoyed I Am Legend (Filmstalker review) , I thought it was a great film, although let down by the ending which tried to deliver both Hollywood and non-Hollywood at the same time, the ending on the DVD was much, much better. However the idea of a prequel seemed somewhat contrived to me, and far too different from the feel of I Am Legend to remain connected.
Now Will Smith has been talking about the I Am Legend film and I'm believing more and more that the prequel film will turn into something very different from the original.
I Am Legend (Filmstalker review) was very much about the isolation and the loss of humanity of the lead character, and about his redemption in finding that humanity once again, and not always in the places you'd imagine. I really loved that about the story, and I really liked the style they had through the film.
However the ideas for the prequel just make me think of two types of films, infectious disease spreading through the populous and creatures galore attacking squads of trained soldiers en mass.
Now what Will Smith is saying doesn't have me filled with any more hope than that. Perhaps they have something else up their sleeves.
“It’s essentially the fall of the last city – the last stand of Manhattan. The movie would be…within the body of the movie D.C. and then Manhattan would fall as the last city. It’s a really cool idea trying to figure it out…there’s a reason why we have to take a small band and we have to get into D.C. So we have to make our way from New York to D.C. and then back to New York.”
You know what that seems like? - I say seems like because the game didn't actually turn out like that but the trailers for it suggested so – the videogame Left 4 Dead. When you watch the trailers for that you see a group of survivors, very clichéd survivors, battling to get out of a city which has been placed on total quarantine and locked down by the army.
To me this sounds like it's going to go that way. A group of survivors and/or soldiers led by Colonel Robert Neville fighting to get to Washington D.C. and then back again to New York trying to get hold of something? Perhaps on the way the survivors either die or get turned and he's left on his own.
You know I just had a thought, perhaps it's a race to get hold of the person who created the retro-virus in the first place, Dr. Alice Krippin played by Emma Thompson? That would make sense.
Regardless it does sound similar to films we've heard before. One way it could be a mankind being destroyed and the other way a fight against the creatures, two for one.
I'm not sure, there are so many ideas in there and even Smith says that they're still trying to work it all out. What do you think? Is there an idea in there you like, or is it all too far removed from I Am Legend for you?
