Wolverine talks Deadpool and Gambit
Wolverine, aka Hugh Jackman, has been talking about his latest film X-Men Origins: Wolverine and been paying a lot of lip service to characters other than his own, mainly Deadpool and Gambit.
Gambit is a character that the X-Men fans have been wanting to see arrive for sometime, and Jackman tells us a little about his character in the film, as well as telling us a little about the reveal of Deadpool.
“He’s a little more showy than Wolverine, but there’s a similarity. They’re outsiders, they’re wise-cracking, they’re anti-authority.
In this movie Gambit plays the role a little bit like Wolverine did in the first X-Men. He’s not part of any group, he’s not on anybody’s side. Wolverine gets him because he needs the information off him, but Gambit’s not going to give it – not without a fight. And they get a fight, the two of them get a fight. I’m really, really happy with the dynamic between the two.
I quite liked Pyro in X-Men 2. I really loved that kind of relationship, because he turns to the dark side in a way. I always feel when I was acting that Wolverine could see a lot of himself in Pyro, y’know? The loose cannon.
And just a little aggressive, a little badass really and it’s the same with Gambit. Gambit’s got a little bit of that. A little showy, a little flashy, arrogant, so kind of Wolverine… They have a dynamic where they love giving each other [expletive removed - Richard]. There’s some good stuff in there.”
It's really difficult trying to hone down that quote, and I just decided I couldn't because it explains the character of Gambit so well. He really connects to Wolverine, but it looks like Gambit is going to chose a different side, or he already has.
Then he talks about Deadpool, and again I'm struggling to cut down the quotes from Total Film online, they're just so good.
“I have to be very careful how I talk about Deadpool, because it’s something I’m really excited about in the movie, where it plays and how it plays. I just can’t think right now how I can tell you about it without giving away some really cool ideas!
That’s where David Benioff was really smart, how coolly he brought that character in.
The things I’m thinking about now I don’t want to tell you because the fans will go “Awwww, that’s cool”… Actually some fans might be pissed off but that’s ok. I think they’ll understand why we did it. We took some creative licenses with him.”
That does suggest that there's going to be a little controversy about how the character comes into play, cool I think yes, not like the comic books, I think that's now a given. Get ready to be overly excited and fill comment screens and message boards, for if you're a big Gambit fan and know how he comes into play, this could be an unwelcome surprise.
I had to dig for the source article since Comic Book Movie didn't even provide a link, just wrote it in the text, no matter I found it and you can read the entire interview over at Total Film, these quotes only make up two of the five pages, and in the rest he talks about the Japanese Wolverine story he so desperately wants to do and how he wanted to make this for the fans.
I really have to give Hugh Jackman credit here, he does really know how to engage the fans and bring something they hold dear to the screen. He's not imposed his way and really created what the fans want, and look at the success he's having, something that I think is set to continue with X-Men: Origins.
