Director talks Hairspray 2
Hairspray 2 is still in development, but the director has given a few more details about what you'll be seeing.
Adam Shankman tell us about a potential title for the film, and also a big name star who may not be appearing.
It was July last year that we first heard John Waters was writing a treatment for a sequel to Hairspray. A few potential themes also emerged in November, but the director has given even more away this time.
It’s crazy. [The treatment] is amazing, but it’s crazy. There are things in there that I was like ‘Can we do that?’ It’s real John Waters-y stuff, and it was more like a sequel to his movie than to our movie. Which I love, because then that becomes re-interpreted.
So it sounds like the sequel could be quite different to the first. It also sounds like there is some stuff which is unlikely to make it past the script stage though. Seems Waters has plans for Zac Efron's character to take drugs of some kind.
I think that’s probably part of the treatment that won’t get used. And in the treatment, [Efron’s drug use] is an accident. That’s the kind of stuff where you’re like: ‘Yeah, I don’t know if that’s going to work.’
The treatment also sees John Travolta's character Edna getting hooked on diet pills. And despite rumours that Travolta didn't want to be involved, Shankman says it is still a possibility. Travolta has said that they should keep going with the script, and if it's funny he'll do it. That was obviously before his recent loss though, so who knows what will happen. One person who he doesn't think will be back though is Michelle Pfeiffer.
Yeah, probably [no Michelle Pfeiffer]. Not because we didn’t love her, but because we just thought different adversaries [would be necessary].
The news doesn't end there though. The title of the film is roughly pencilled as Hairspray 2: White Lipstick. That's apparently the title of the treatment, and a nod to the original title for Waters first film. Also, the last news we heard had the Vietnam War as a backdrop for the film. But Shankman says Efron's character will not be getting drafted.
So, no shortage of new news on the sequel from the director there. I've only ever watched the first film by John Waters. The latest one did seem to be a huge hit though. And the news seems promising for the sequel. Does all the latest news, please you Hairspray fans?
