Fuqua wants Penn for Scarpa
Antoine Fuqua has recently completed Brooklyn's Finest, starring Richard Gere, Ethan Hawke and Don Cheadle.
Sounds like he might not be moving too far for one his future projects. And he's hoping Sean Penn will join the cast.
Brooklyn's Finest stars Gere, Hawke and Cheadle. It sees three New York cops who are unconnected, end up at the same deadly place, despite following very different career paths. The director, Antoine Fuqua, is the same man that brought us Training Day. And for one of his next films, he plans to stick with the crime theme.
Fuqua told Coming Soon that he plans on making a bio-pic about Gregory Scarpa Sr. Not only was he a member of the Colombo crime family, but he was also an FBI informant for many years. Fuqua is already talking to a potential leading man:
It's called 'Scarpa' with Morgan Creek, and it's New York again, Brooklyn, FBI, Italian gangsters, it takes place from the '60s to the '90s, and we're talking to Sean Penn.
Could make for a great mob film. And having made Brooklyn's Finest without studio involvement, Fuqua still wants to stay as independent as possible while making Scarpa.
I still want to do it for under a certain amount of money - I would just love to stay under $30, under $25 (million), I'd love to try and have my independence that way.
From what I can tell, Brooklyn's Finest is still finding distributers so no release date yet. I though Training Day was a great film though, so hopefully we'll all get a chance to see this one. And that Fuqua gets his man for Scarpa.
