Screen Actors Guild 2009 Award winners

SAGAward.jpgThe winners of the 2009 Screen Actors Guild Awards have been announced, and they're rather surprising in the film categories, not so interesting in the television category which seems to miss out some of the best television I've seen from America this, and previous, years.

There are some strong surprises, and the expected ones, and having seen The Curious Case of Benjamin Button I'm wondering why no one was considering Cate Blanchett for an award for her role when they're considering Brad Pitt for his performance of not saying much nor showing much emotion.

Another thing that has me rather miffed again in the television categories is that neither The Shield nor Battlestar Galactica are mentioned, something which is running through all of the television awards this year. Mind you as people will tell me, the awards are not about the best, they are about the most popular, the attention (mainly headline) grabbing and the show of it all.

Hence, with that, it's no surprise that Heath Ledger has won the Best Supporting Actor role for The Dark Knight (Filmstalker review), a film that sees no other nominations apart from that of Stunt Ensemble which it also won.

Great news for Sean Penn who I think is well deserving of the win for Best Actor for Milk (Filmstalker review), and I think an against the grain win for Meryl Streep for Doubt, beating out Kate Winslet who does pick up the award for Supporting Actress, a category where Taraji P. Henson beats her for The Curious Case of Benjamin Button.

Slumdog Millionaire (Filmstalker review) does win an award though, not for the supporting actor of Dev Patel's gaping mouth performance in the film as Supporting Actor (was he supporting? Who was the lead then?), but for the Ensemble Cast, an award that could have gone to Milk or perhaps even better Frost/Nixon (Filmstalker review).

As for television, well for the most part get your checklist out and tick the usual boxes, although it is good to see Hugh Laurie win for House, and Laura Linney and Paul Giamatti pick up awards for their television acting roles.

Come on though, we see the same faces and the same shows in here all the time, are BSG and The Shield really that unpopular? Here are the full nominees and winners through Variety if you're really interested.

Nice to see Paul Giamatti get the nod, he was very good in that part and he's always a fun actor.

I never really thought much of him until Sideways and believe it or not Lady in the Water.
