Brad Bird on 1906, Toy Story 3

BradBird.jpgBrad Bird has given an update on both 1906 and Toy Story 3.Both are in the early stages, with Toy Story 3 the further ahead of the two.

1906 sounds like quite an undertaking, and it really could turn into something special.

It was February 2007 when we first heard about 1906. Based on the book of the same name, it tells the story of the massive earthquake and fires in San Francisco that year. More specifically, it looks at the events leading up to it, which left San Francisco ill prepared.

Brad Bird is turning from animation to live action for this one. And he gave an update to MTV Movies Blog:

The best way to sum up ["1906”], would be that it’s a romantic, epic, mystery with lots of action in it, based around events leading up to and through the earthquake in San Francisco in 1906. It’s really a hard script to write. Mostly because there are so many things going on in that place in that particular period of time. Any time you’re going toward something, you’re going away from five other cool things… We’ll see if they have the courage to make it. We’re proceeding as if.

The they he talks about is apparently the three studios involved, including Pixar and Warner Bros. He also says that most of San Francisco will be digitally created, along the lines of Peter Jackson's King Kong.

On Toy Story 3, he had less to say. We do know that it is heading into production soon though. But he is not for giving any other details away.

It’s about ready to go into production. They’re just about finished with “Up!”and then the animators will regain their senses for a few weeks...You’re trying to trick me! There are some new characters, yes. It’s going to be a lot of fun.

1906 sounds like a potentially great project. It will all hook on those digitally created images of San Francisco I guess. And it's good to know Toy Story 3 is moving along. Let's hope the story lives up to the first two.
