Christian Bale apologises
In the world of Hollywood image is everything and your image can affect how the audience perceives you and ultimately your film sales, and so it wasn't going to be long before Christian Bale came out publicly and talked about his outburst on set.
You'll remember that outburst which I wrote about the other day and linked to the audio, well now we have a link to the audio of Bale talking about what happened, apologising, and saying the matter is over. Well done Bale.
Seriously, I have to hand it to the guy, imagine if you heard yourself going off on the rant all across worldwide television and radio, imagine the inescapable sinking feeling you'd get. Imagine the embarrassment you'd feel and the fact that you would be hearing about it every single moment for weeks, if not years.
Now imagine that you work in an environment where image is everything, and your whole career rests on your last performance and whatever gossip is being dredged up or made up.
Now imagine you have to decide what to do next, and you have to try and salvage something back before the media goes totally insane with the story, because it's not blowing over. What do you do?
Well if you have the sensibility, humility and sheer balls of Christian Bale, you call up a radio station that was active in having a dig at you and unreservedly apologise for your behaviour, actually he did more than that.
“It's been a miserable week for me...
The thing that I really want to stress is I have no confusion whatsoever. I was out of order beyond belief. I was way out of order. I acted like a punk. I regret that.
There is nobody that has heard that tape that's been hit harder by it than me. I make no excuses for it. It is unexcusable. I hope that that is absolutely clear...
...I'm embarrassed by it. I ask everybody to sit down and ask themselves, have they ever had a bad day and have they ever lost their temper and really regretted it immensely...
...Feel free to make fun of me at my expense, I deserve it completely...
...We have resolved this completely...I have no intention of getting anyone fired. There is no problem whatsoever.”
Reading the story elsewhere and listening to the audio, which you can hear on the front page of the radio website thanks to Collider, he goes on to talk about how the moment came about and says that he was in a particularly strong scene where he had to capture the craziness of the Connors in this one moment and it was while he was in character and stuck between the reality and the acting that his attention was taken and...well we know the rest.
You know what, I like that, some of the things he said there cut right to the core, and there's not much in the way of excuses, it's just the way it is.
It's fair to note that originally I understood how this could happen, and looking into it without leaping onto the bandwagon to scream about how evil Christian Bale is, I could see how he could lose it – and you can read that argument in the previous story about his rant.
This apology is more of a laying bare of the facts, and almost of Bale laying himself bare to the public, and I appreciate that, because he doesn't have to do it, he doesn't have to pamper to the gossip and those having a dig at him. He could so easily rise above it and let the films do the talking.
What do you think of what he's said? Do you care?
