Anthony Hopkins to play Hemingway

ErnestHemingway.jpgNow I might have this wrong, but this could be the third Ernest Hemingway film in development, or it could be the second one which has changed somewhat from the first, so far there's not enough detail to be sure.

However one thing is sure according to reports, and that's the fact that Anthony Hopkins is set to play Ernest Hemingway in this film of the man's life.

The film is called Hemingway & Fuentes and is being produced and directed by Andy Garcia who co-wrote the script with Hemingway's niece Hilary Hemingway, who is also an author. According to the Hollywood Insider story, she's also set to co-star in the film playing Gregorio Fuentes, who befriended Hemingway in the last ten years of his life.

It is said that Fuentes, a fishing boat captain, was the inspiration for the character of Santiago in Hemingway's The Old Man and the Sea.

It seems that Garcia has been pushing this project for a number of years and it's looking for funding right now, but if it does go ahead then Anthony Hopkins is set to take that lead role, and discussions are already ongoing with Annette Benning to play Hemingway's wife.

Sounds a great cast, and I love the link with Hemingway's life through his niece both co-writing and starring in the film. However it does have competition, and this might make it the third announced film about the author, although it's not clear where the other two projects are.

We've heard of one based on the biography Papa Hemingway: A Personal Memoir (Amazon.co.uk / Amazon.com), and then there's the one that sees James Gandolfini playing Hemingway. The former we heard about in February of this year, and the latter was way back in August 2006, so I'm really not sure if that one is coming to fruition.

However Anthony Hopkins as Hemingway is a superb casting choice in my eyes, and we could see a great performance from the actor. Let's just hope it gets some funding.

I always find Hopkins hypnotic.
