Efron leaves Footloose
I had high hopes when I read this, was the planned remake of Footloose off? No, not at all according to the studio, it's only that Zac Efron has left the lead role for reasons we aren't yet totally clear on, but could easily guess.
Hollywood is remake central right now, and when they pick one new area of film to attack there seems to be a complete feeding frenzy, Fame and Footloose were announced extremely close together, neither really needing a remake.
However it's going ahead, even if Zac Efron isn't on board. There's no reason really given such as a busy schedule or anything, it's just said that another musical isn't what he wants to do at this point in his career. However warning, that comes from an inside “source” on the production team through Wrap.com, USA Today and Empire, so who knows if that's really the reason.
Worse still the “source” has some rather nasty details about it saying that Efron used a loophole in the contract to get out and used a script rewrite to get out of the deal.
However it was done it's the reason that strikes me as odd as he made the decision and signed for the deal last year, getting more pay and script approval, so why go to all that bother and decide to get out? I don't understand why he wouldn't want to do another musical for more money even while he's doing other, more serious roles.
I also don't understand why he just backed out today and didn't say something before he signed the contract last year or even right after.
However it does look like he's gone and the project is continuing, according to Paramount in an official statement, no “sources” on that one:
“Footloose is a project we've longed to see re-booted for a new generation. While Zac is no longer attached, we remain excited and committed to the collective brain trust of Kenny Ortega, Neil Meron and Craig Zaden, who will reinvigorate the franchise. Their fresh take on the film will undoubtedly be filled with the same kind of breakout performances that we’ve come to expect from them.”
So the Footloose remake goes ahead without Zac Efron, and I don't think that's a great loss, it'll allow another talent to have a chance at something more. However I still don't know how the film will play out, are they going to set it in a town where rock music and drinking are banned? Are there any other there like that which aren't deeply rooted in religious fundamentalism?
I'm not so sure if the Footloose film will work in this day and age, I can't see them dancing for their freedom any more, can you?
