Riddick sequel moving forward?
If Vin Diesel's comments are to be believed then there's more movement on a Riddick sequel than we thought. Following on from the very good Pitch Black we had the not so good Chronicles of Riddick, and that film introduced a whole universe of possibility for the character, however the film seemed to dump a lot of what that original character was about from Pitch Black and the audience were gone.
I thought there wouldn't be another film, despite the comments about it by Diesel, back in September of last year we even heard him talking about another two sequels, comments which really did sound like they were hopeful, but not with any substance.
That may well have changed though as we hear that with the release of the latest videogame in the Riddick series, The Chronicles of Riddick: Assault on Dark Athena (Amazon.co.uk / Amazon.com ), a film seems to be further ahead than we thought. Gamespot through Coming Soon have the comments from Vin Diesel himself:
"Maybe we're too tight-lipped about the next 'Chronicles of Riddick' film, and I think circa the release of [Dark Athena] that's probably when you'll start hearing more about the next 'Riddick' film...It is underway and I almost think it's a coincidence that we haven't heard anything, that there hasn't been a lot of public stuff on the 'Riddick' movie."
He was clear that David Twohy was finishing the script for the film, the man who wrote and directed the first two Riddick films. but I'm not sure I understand what Diesel meant when he said that it's a coincidence that we haven't heard anything. Why, because the videogame is being released and the film is to tie in with it? I don't get why that would be a coincidence. I don't know, does anyone have an idea why he would be talking like this about the film?
Twohy wrote and directed both films, which is strange considering Pitch Black was so good and The Chronicles of Riddick wasn't. However we heard back in September, when Diesel told us that Twohy was writing the sequel, that they were going for a smaller budget and going back to the roots of the character, a la Pitch Black. Now that's excellent news because that's where the character was so good.
He also said then that they were working on two sequels and might film them back to back, there's no word of that now so perhaps they're trying to play it safe. However in this time of sequels to older franchises, it looks like this could be a distinct possibility, if they go back to the style of Pitch Black.
