Shane Black says Lethal Weapon 5 is dead
Efforts to make a fifth Lethal Weapon film, have been teetering on the edge of failure for a while. First Richard Donner was off it, then Mel Gibson wasn't interested.
Now Shane Black, who had written a script for it, says that a fifth one will never happen.
The saga of Lethal Weapon 5 has been ongoing for a while, just click here for all the comings and goings. Last we heard, Mel Gibson had counted himself out of a fifth film. Either because he plain wasn't interested, or because Richard Donner had been sidelined from the film.
That left Joel Silver with Shane Black, and a script for the fifth film. One Black now believes won't be made. A Warner Bros. spokesperson seemed to agree with him,
That one is as good as dead. It won’t happen. Which is a pity.
Apparently the reason it's a bummer is because the script was so darned good. With Murtagh and Riggs teaming up with Murtagh's son. Warner Bros. told Moviehole, through Coming Soon, that the script was;
...fabulous. A much better send off than [Number 4].
Well with no Mel Gibson, we could pretty much stick a fork in it anyway. But it sounds like the whole idea is a no go for now. Unless Richard Donner has more luck persuading Gibson back, we can pretty much say a fifth film won't appear.
I'd much rather nothing happened, than they tried to "reboot" the whole franchise with new stars. Let's hope no one comes up with that idea any time soon.
