Shane Black says Lethal Weapon 5 is dead

LethalWeapon.jpgEfforts to make a fifth Lethal Weapon film, have been teetering on the edge of failure for a while. First Richard Donner was off it, then Mel Gibson wasn't interested.

Now Shane Black, who had written a script for it, says that a fifth one will never happen.

The saga of Lethal Weapon 5 has been ongoing for a while, just click here for all the comings and goings. Last we heard, Mel Gibson had counted himself out of a fifth film. Either because he plain wasn't interested, or because Richard Donner had been sidelined from the film.

That left Joel Silver with Shane Black, and a script for the fifth film. One Black now believes won't be made. A Warner Bros. spokesperson seemed to agree with him,

That one is as good as dead. It won’t happen. Which is a pity.

Apparently the reason it's a bummer is because the script was so darned good. With Murtagh and Riggs teaming up with Murtagh's son. Warner Bros. told Moviehole, through Coming Soon, that the script was;

...fabulous. A much better send off than [Number 4].

Well with no Mel Gibson, we could pretty much stick a fork in it anyway. But it sounds like the whole idea is a no go for now. Unless Richard Donner has more luck persuading Gibson back, we can pretty much say a fifth film won't appear.

I'd much rather nothing happened, than they tried to "reboot" the whole franchise with new stars. Let's hope no one comes up with that idea any time soon.

If a reboot Lethal Weapon ever comes around I will not pay to see it even if its in the most powerful THX screen the Empire Leicester Square London, I will not pay to see it! As far as I’m conceded the series ended back in 1997 after nearly 10 years its time to move on.

The best thing Warner can do is get what is called a Road Show reboot of the first three in 70mm Dolby stereo A and SR type played in THX cinemas along with 4th film at the end in 35mm Dolby SR-D as that is how it should be presented.

If Warner can’t meet those demands then maybe they should just think of new and interesting films that haven’t been yet tried or find a new job because I’m sick and tired with reboot films with new actors its boring and unoriginal!

I would love to see a Lethal Weapon 5 with Mel and Danny. A final movie to send both characters into retirement would be fabulous!
I would not pay to see a remake of the series with a new director and new actors though. Remakes are almost never as good as the original.
