New Star Trek clip annoys
I've just watched the new Star Trek clip, and while everything to date has been exciting and action packed with the young stars looking like their older counterparts, this clip has annoyed me. You see there's something I love about the Star Trek films and that's the writing, the wit and the cleverness.
However this clip has a line from Kirk that sounds like it's right out of a teen film and should be followed by some high-fiving around the cast and whooping and yelping, not Star Trek at all.
Some of the best moments of Star Trek, and I can go straight to Wrath of Khan or The Undiscovered Country for my favourite moments, particularly The Undiscovered Country where we hear the fantastic Christopher Plummer as the Klingon General Chang quoting Shakespeare and screaming “Cry havoc, and let slip the dogs of war!”, a great moment and some great dialogue.
Then we see this new Kirk saying:
“Either we're going down, or they are”
I almost expected him to say something like “you're discharged Sarge” or “It's my way or the highway”.
However, and to leap to the defence of Star Trek as some of you may now be doing, Kirk is irreverent, direct, and indeed a little less intelligently spoken than some of the other characters, and that is indeed his charm.
Yet this line just screams action adventure film to me. Here's hoping it's one line pulled out of context to grab the attention of the action adventure fans and pull them into a franchise that would otherwise not be enticing for them. Getting the Transformers crowd into Star Trek one could say.
On the strength of this clip I'd be thinking a different thing about the new Star Trek than I have with the footage to date.
