Nightmare on Elm Street Freddy Replacement found
It's no big surprise and the story has been around for a while, but Jackie Earle Haley has been announced as the new Freddy Kreuger. Surprised? Shouldn't be really, he's perfect to take over, and if you didn't think so then you should seeWatchmen (Filmstalker Review)to see why.
However good the casting choice is though, there is one bad side to it all, a remake to A Nightmare on Elm Street is going ahead. Why oh why?
The news is there though, the right man for the job of Freddy Krueger in the remake of A Nightmare on Elm Street has been chosen, Jackie Earle Haley according to Bloody Disgusting through IESB (who do not provide any link back to Bloody Disgusting).
Cracking news I'd say, he'll make for a much edgier and darker character than the Freddy we knew, although hopefully they won't take the character in any other direction than that. Of course there is the question of whether or not they need to remake the film, barring some dodgy aged effects shots of course.
I'm not one that's really keen on the remake idea, and as you know I'm not keen on many remakes that have, or are, hitting Hollywood. I'd much prefer some original material, even if it is going to be slightly based on the past. The remake machine is a poor answer by Hollywood to try and cut costs and production time while pulling in ready made audiences to the cinema and increasing box office costs.
In my opinion that's a hugely flawed model and one that isn't sustainable, and not for the lack of films to be remade.
If they have to remake something why not go back to films from way in the past, or films that actually could benefit from a remake because they just aren't so good.
However it's happening, A Nightmare on Elm Street is being remade and Jackie Earle Haley is the new Freddy Kreuger. It's the right choice surely?
