Ridley Scott to return to Alien franchise?

RidleyScott.jpgSome seriously stretched out rumours for the Alien franchise have come to light. Previously we've only heard from Sigourney Weaver who has been keen to return to the franchise, or the next day saying that the character has run her course. These days she's keen to return if Ridley Scott would, and he might.

The might becomes a lot stronger when Tom Rothman, the co-Chairman for Fox, reveals that there's some talk about another film and that Ridley Scott may well be toying with the idea to return.

Of course let's put this in perspective with the normal cautionary banner. People in the industry use the media, and particularly the blogging media, to pitch ideas out there and get other industry insiders to consider the possibilities without formally approaching them. Plant the seed of an idea in their mind, and in the media and audience's minds and get them thinking, wanting and talking about it too.

That could be what Tom Rothman is doing right here, it really could, or he could genuinely mean that there have been some meetings and that Ridley Scott is considering the possibility.

The whole thing stems out of a comment when asked by IESB about if they are working on a new Alien:

"There's been some talk. Ridley Scott, Ridley is right now working on Robin Hood, but I think he's toying with the idea and that would be great for us. I mean, it's always been a matter of, really, if you can get the originator to do it that would be the greatest thing, so I've got my fingers crossed, all of them."

Toying with the idea is superb, and it would be great if he came back on board because you know that Sigourney Weaver would be right on board, however the reality is a long way off.

What they really need to do is find the story, and that's the big difficulty. Scott and Weaver can talk all they want about the possibilities of returning and doing another film, but if the story isn't there and isn't strong then they won't.

I'm guessing we're all up for another one though.
