Will the Venom film work?

Venom.jpgI've been reading about the Venom film for a little while now and I still can't seem to get anything from it that sounds exciting. Yes Venom is a cool character and is great for battling Spider-Man, mainly as he shows the darker side of Spider-Man, but as a stand alone character in his own film?

The writers have been talking about developing the character into a full film and the reality seems that they are a long way off the final movie and there's a hint that they are having to compromise with two studios already.

The story that Venom has been an ongoing project has been about for a while now, and the writers, Rhett Reese and Paul Wernick, have been quite open about discussing where they are with the project.

Until now they had been saying that they had gone deep into the mythology of the character to understand the source of the story, but in a little update the other day from Coming Soon through Latino Review they reveal a rather more guarded comment from Rhett Reese.

“There were certain things they wanted us… certain parameters they gave us...But largely we pitched them something and they liked it but they had changes, so we worked on the outline for a long time and then we wrote the script. So with Marvel and Sony and us it’s definitely very, very collaborative.”

I am reading between the lines here but that seems a lot more like they've been restricted in what they wanted to do with the story, actually that's not reading between the lines at all, that seems to be what they're saying right off the bat, in a non-revealing sort of way of course.

Collaborative with Sony doesn't bother me as much as collaborative with Marvel does, remember Spider-Man 3?

Even putting all this to the side, I still find myself struggling with the concept of a Venom film without Spider-Man. Of course we might see him in passing, but to be honest the character is designed to create a dichotomy against Spider-Man, the two extremes of the characters.

They are both so intertwined I can't really see Venom working on his own, unless they structure it like a Spider-Man film with Venom as the main bad guy but just reverse the focus, so that Venom is the lead character and they look at the relationship with Spider-Man from the reverse angle.

Actually, I really like that idea now. How do you think a Venom film could really work?
