Cliffhanger to be remade
It seems this is a day of remake news and the next up is the film Cliffhanger, the Renny Harlin film with Sylvester Stallone delivering a pretty damn good job of delivering a strong action film with some good characters in it, including John Lithgow delivering an excellent bad guy.
However the plan seems to be rather flawed from the start, see if you can see the flaw in the statement from the producer Neal Moritz.
"Just as they rebooted Star Trek, we're going to do the same with Cliffhanger"
What? Let me just check, Cliffhanger is going to be rebooted like Star Trek? How exactly will a single film be restarted like the huge franchise of films and series of Star Trek? Does that have you a little confused? It certainly does me, for there really is no comparison.
Unless that is he didn't mean to compare them. What he perhaps meant is that Star Trek (Filmstalker review) took the spirit of what went before and made it in the style of a modern audience, a style of big, fast, constant action, a style of young, sexy actors, less about relationships and characterisation and more about excitement.
That's something it seems that the article in Variety seems to be agreeing with when they tell us that:
"Unlike the original, where Italy stood in for the Colorado Rockies, the new redo looks set to feature multiple cliff-face locations...A big-budget international action-adventure thriller set in a big mountain milieu...will center on a group of young climbers."
So that's what they're going to do, remake the film with a group of young stars, slap in multiple locations, and throw a big budget at it to increase the effects and the action, and that's Cliffhanger rebooted as per Star Trek. Except I'm not sure anyone wants to see it.
