Craven confirms Scream 4 casting
Wes Craven has confirmed that Scream 4 is going ahead and he's also been talking about who's going to star, and who itsn't.
What's more is the surprise of who wants to direct it, and believe me this is a surprise to say the least, and it might not be Craven.
According to Wes Craven Scream 4 is definitely going ahead, and to confirm the rumour that we'd been hearing, both the Arquettes, Courteney Cox Arquette and David Arquette, are almost signed and will be returning to the film, but according Craven they're the only ones who are returning.
"I've been told, and I don't think they'll mind if I say this, the deals on David Arquette and Courteney are virtually set. I believe everybody else will be new."
Now that was a response to the direct question of who would be starring and if Neve Campbell would be returning, and just as I'd been saying, she won't be. I do find it surprising though that we're only seeing the Arquettes returning and no one else.
The comments from Wes Craven come from Digital Spy who have the story (note that I'm giving a link back to the source article which they never do).
He doesn't stop there though, and he starts to discuss who could be directing, it could be him, or…
"I had a brief conversation with Kevin [Williamson], I know that Kevin is writing. What I've said to Bob is I'm not closed to it, I'm not open to it, I'll be perfectly happy to read a script and tell him what I think. That's where it's at and I'm not expecting a script until August. I don't know what the premise is or anything."
So it could be that we'll see Craven returning to direct Scream 4, but only if the script and story grab him. If they don't there's another option, Bob Weinstein, yes I kid you not.
"Bob Weinstein (The Weinstein Company co-chairman) has talked to me, he's interested in me directing it."
Part of me wonders if this is a bit of leverage to try and push Craven towards directing, after all if the choice is he either does it or leaves it to Weinstein…well, I'll leave you to think about that one.
If it is Weinstein though, he has one writing and directing deal behind him, well it was a co-writing and co-directing job along with Harvey Weinstein called Playing for Keeps and it doesn't really get a strong write up.
That aside Kevin Williamson also confirmed to Craven that it's going to be a trilogy:
"I don't think it's a reboot and Kevin, when he talked to me, said, 'Remember, it's not just Scream 4, it's Scream 5 and 6. So I guess he has a trilogy in mind."
So it's a new trilogy with the Arquettes on board and no Campbell. No surprise, as I said before she's off doing a lot of independent work and there isn't really a desire for her career to go in this direction, but the big question is will they be able to make it good enough for Wes Craven to come back to the series? Or will we get to see Weinstein directing?
