Edinburgh International Film Festival 2009: Day Three

EIFF.pngToday didn't go at all well, there was just so much going wrong you'd think it was a comedy farce. With missed buses, falling asleep for too long, squashed glasses on the bus (all okay) and not being able to help out a friend because I was too late, all just added insult to injury.

It's just as well I was set to catch the Vincent Cassel double bill (not bikk as I said online!) as Jacques Mesrine, the infamous French criminal. L'instinct de mort (Mesrine: Part 1 - Death Instinct) and L'ennemi public n°1 (Mesrine: Part II - Public Enemy #1), running from 12:30 until 17:28 with a 45 minute break - numb bums all round.

Not so, for the first part of Mesrine's life, L'instinct de mort, was superb, really. The only oddity was where it ended, and having opened with the ending from the second film, it all felt rather unfinished and hastily chopped. However there's not much else I can say against it, it was a really stylish film with a superb performance from Cassel who is one of my favourite actors these days.

The second film, L'ennemi public n°1, wasn't as strong as the first and this could easily have been chopped down to an hour and added onto the first film, sure that would have meant a three hour long film, but with the quality no one would have minded.

Despite the second film faltering, I'd definitely recommend the first, and therefore you need to see the second for the story to be completed.

With that I came home and made tea, something I don't do enough! Now it's some writing and an early night, there's a big day tomorrow with three films and it starts at 09:15 with Outrage, then heading to the Filmhouse for Salvage and Surrogate. See you there, and as usual I'm twittering through the day.

L'instinct de mort (Mesrine: Part 1 - Death Instinct) is showing at the EIFF on the 20th of June. 18:45 at Cineworld 7 and the 21st, 18:20 in Cineworld 3. It has been released across the world already but has Brazil on the 26th of June and the UK on 7th August.

L'ennemi public n°1 (Mesrine: Part II - Public Enemy #1) is showing at the EIFF on the 20th of June. 21:05 at Cineworld 7 and the 22nd, 18:15 in Cineworld 3. With a worldwide release already completed, the UK is last on the 28th August, strange Brazil doesn't seem to be getting it yet, Part 1 but no Part 2!

Caught the Mesrine films yesterday and thought both were very good. I disagree that Part 2 was a weaker film, but do agree that a stronger film could have been had from going with a three hour feature. 30 minutes cutting from both films would do the trick nicely.

Have said that, I didn't once find myself wondering how long was to go, and thats always a good sign - and an even better sign for a double feature.

Keep up the good festival reporting Richard... and fingers crossed you have a good second week.

Cheers Steven. It's been another interesting day today, updates coming soon, have to clean up the kitchen first!
