It has been almost a year since we first heard that Rose McGowan would be starring as Red Sonja. Robert Rodriguez was producing, but not directing, and they planned on having it in cinemas this year.

Not much news since then, but now the Executive Producer has given an update on where they are.

It all seemed a go on the Red Sonja front last year. Rose McGowan had the lead role, Robert Rodriguez was producing. And Douglas Aarniokoski was on directing duties. The Executive Producer, Joe Gatta, says it is still happening.

Because of certain issues and the economy, we had to change our plan a bit. It's frustrating because we thought we'd make the movie last year, before Conan.

Gatta was talking to Empire Online, though Jo Blo. He says that they hope to start filming next year. And the plan is still to tell the origin story of Red Sonja, no doubt setting us up for some sequels. The film will show her transformation from victim, to tough woman hell bent on revenge.
