Shia LaBeouf still wants Last Man
Sometimes you never know where you stand with these Hollywood types. Just recently Shia LaBeouf seemed to be suggesting that he would not be appearing in Y: The Last Man.
He said he thought it was too similar to other characters he's played. Now he's saying he might, but not anytime soon
Shia LaBeouf has been attached to Y: The Last Man for quite some time now. And D.J. Caruso has been on for directing duties. It is a film adaptation of a comic book, which sees a plague wipe out all male mammals. One man and his capuchin monkey are left behind in a planet full of females.
However, recently Shia LaBeouf expressed some doubt over his participation, saying that the role was too close to the one he plays in Transformers. He also suggested that by the time the film got made, he might be too old to play the part of Yorick Brown. That may not be the case just yet though, as he told Collider.
You see, the thing is Brian K. Vaughn, Neil Gaiman, the guys who write the “Criminal” series, these are all my favorite, this is my favorite stuff to read. It’s the stuff that I love. “Y: The Last Man” is my favorite comic book. It’s also DJ Caruso’s favorite comic book. We DO want to make it. It’s just too “Sam Witwicky”...It’s not as big as a variation for me. I want to do something that’s foreign.
So maybe he is just waiting on a script rewrite which will solve that problem. Although if that is the nature of the comic book character, then how much can they change it? Or he wants a big enough break from similar roles. Not to worry though, if you really want to see LaBeouf in that role. Asked if he could see himself coming to the role in a few years he said:
Absolutely, man! In fact, that’s what’s going on right now. Vaughn and Ellsworth and DJ are writing the script now. The script is not ready to be shot. DJ is making a different movie right now. He’s making “Jack and the Beanstalk”. There’s just other things going on with DJ and I wouldn’t want to make the movie with anybody else because he loves it like I do. But I don’t think Vaughn is trying to give it to anybody else. I think that it is something that’s very realistic, it’s just not in the pipe for the next year.
So it’s a combination of scripting problems and scheduling. Maybe La Beouf is waiting to find out what the script is like, before committing himself. He is still extremely excited about the project though. Asked if there was a chance that he would still make the film?
Yeah. Absolutely, man.
So, he's not definitely off the film, but it might just take longer than we thought. Should we be worried that they will rewrite the character to appease La Beouf? Is the Yorick character really that close to La Beouf's other work?
