Fanning on Wizard of Oz remake?

WizardofOz.jpgIt was back in August of 2007 that I wrote about Todd McFarlane talking about his Wizard of Oz remake adapted directly from the L. Frank Baum novels by the writer of A History of Violence, Josh Olson, a crazy sounding idea but almost two years later the idea is still going strong. Stronger even.

The word is that the story is still going strong and that McFarlane is still talking up the idea. More than that though it's now a modern day sequel and there's a rumour that Dakota fanning is taking up the role of Alice.

Previously, in 2007, the writer Josh Olson said of his script of the remake idea that:

"I saw those toys, and Dorothy as some bondage queen isn't something I want to do...The appealing thing about the Baum books to me is how wildly imaginative they are. There are crazy characters from amazing places. I want this to be 'Harry Potter' dark, not 'Seven' dark...

...A lot of the plot is mine, but the characters are all Baum."

Then Todd McFarlane wanted something a little different:

"I saw those toys, and Dorothy as some bondage queen isn't something I want to do...The appealing thing about the Baum books to me is how wildly imaginative they are. There are crazy characters from amazing places. I want this to be 'Harry Potter' dark, not 'Seven' dark...

...A lot of the plot is mine, but the characters are all Baum."

Now I'm not so sure if Olson is still writing this version of Oz, but we do know that McFarlane is still on the go with the film and that now it's a sequel. According to McFarlane through The Daily Express, ComicBookMovie and The Guardian he says:

"You've still got Dorothy trapped in an odd place, but she's much closer to the Ripley character from Alien [Sigourney Weaver] than a helpless singing girl."

However the Daily Express story is saying that the film is the "brainchild" of the film, producer Basil Iwanyk, says:

"It will be set in the present day and feature Dorothy's granddaughter."

So the film is going ahead, and the rumour that the Daily Express is carrying is that Dakota Fanning is going to take the part of Alice for the sequel. Only thing is there's no source for the rumour, despite the other sources for the quotes and comments about the film, there's nothing about where the Fanning comment has come from.

Now with the track record of the British tabloids I'm getting my salt bag out to start thinking about how big a pinch to pull out.

Dakota Fanning for Dorothy's Granddaughter?
