Mad Max sequel still happening?

MadMax.jpgThe news on the Mad Max sequel, being called Mad Max: Fury Road for now, has been sparse, and it's not been finding much luck with funding. Indeed George Miller has said that this sequel possibility could well turn into a video game or an animation to get by the problems the film has faced and the fact that there won't be a return by Mel Gibson.

However it seems that there's an actor who is keen to get the project off the ground and wants to help George Miller make it, and not only that but he's willing to take the place of Mel Gibson.

Now I think this is a big leap, and it seems to be something more than the usual positioning by an actor to try and get considered for a role, this sounds like something much, much more, and the name of the actor is someone rather surprising too.

Jeremy Renner is the lead in the excellent The Hurt Locker (Filmstalker review) and has been revealing all saying that he's actually screen testing for the film. Speaking through Modesto Bee through AICN and JoBlo he says:

”I'm also fighting to do the new Mad Max film with George Miller. That might be next summer. I'm screen-testing and meeting George Miller.”

JoBlo raise the point that I've talked about before, if Mel Gibson isn't coming back for the role then what's the real point of making another Mad Max? Max isn't coming back.

Of course we see this happen all the time where the actors change, they're recast and then the film continues with another actor in the role, but the series is so iconic, could they really manage to recast it? I think so. It's been a long time since we saw Mad Max and Jeremy Renner does look a pretty good fit for the character.

Perhaps it's going to be the case that the story is set in the future after the previous Mad Max has passed on and this new character is called Mad Max as kind of tribute or connection to the original.

I don't know, but I think they can do it, and with Renner screen testing it looks like it might be moving forward.
