The Tournament trailer online

TheTournament.jpgWhen I first saw the trailer for The Tournament appear on the internet I read the blurb for the story and passed it by, to be honest it read like it was a lower budget, not too interesting film. Then I saw the trailer this morning and read a little more about it, and I was surprised first at the cast, and then secondly at the trailer.

It looks good, and with Robert Carlyle, Ving Rhames, Kelly Hu, Liam Cunningham and Ian Somerhalder it's definitely above average, especially when you watch the action and see the story unfold.

However there's something all too familiar about it too, the story. Read the blurb of the film, the answer is even in here:

Every seven years in an unsuspecting town, The Tournament takes place. A battle royale between 30 of the world's deadliest assassins. The last man standing receiving the $10,000,000 cash prize and the title of Worlds No 1, which itself carries the legendary million dollar a bullet price tag.

Batoru rowaiaru (Battle Royale). If you haven't seen the film it goes like this, every year a school class is chosen to be taken to an island, each is given a weapon and some helpful, or not so helpful, item and they must do battle to the death. The last one standing is the winner and gains their freedom.

Sounds rather similar, but then there's the fact that a boy and girl team up to try and beat the system, and we see that happening here, except they've been good enough to put some twists in, not least that the boy is a Priest and the girl is one of the assassins in the competition.

You know for all the similarities I'm thinking that they've changed enough in The Tournament to make it work, and by looking at the trailer it certainly looks bloody enough, although not as bloody as Battle Royale.

Here's the trailer to see what you think. Robert Carlyle plays the unfortunate Priest pulled into the game and Kelly Hu the assassin who decides to try and protect him, but what happens come the end?

Woah, that looks good and interesting. Loving the look of the stunt work.
