Favreau to direct Cowboys and Aliens

JonFavreau.jpgIt's been a long time since we started hearing about the Cowboys and Aliens film, where we see Aliens land in the 1800's in the wild west and when they try to invade the Cowboys and Indians team up to fight back.

There's a host of names producing at the moment with Steven Spielberg, Ron Howard, Brian Grazer, all on board, but no director. Robert Downey Jr. is still set to star.

Jon Favreau is described as “circling” the film, with Robert Downey Jr. still attached to star since the first announcement back in 2006.

The film is definitely going up in status, not just with all those producers behind it but also now with the news from Variety that the script is being rewritten by Alex Kurtzman, Roberto Orci and Damon Lindelof, so the focus is definitely rising and you can see that there's going to be a fair push behind the film.

If Favreau signs up to the production then you can expect fun and action, something that's reflected in the writers who have steadily stepped up through the multiple iterations of the script, a script that was previously in the hands of the Iron Man (Filmstalker review) writers.

The story points out that Favreau and Downey Jr. will be working on Iron Man 2 and 3 before they step foot on this production, so it would be a while yet before we see Cowboys and Aliens. Or perhaps this might be seen as a gap between the second and third Iron Man films to let everyone breathe, including the audience.
