Jolie awaits director for Tourist
Angelina Jolie seems to be confirmed for The Tourist from that earlier rumour that she was in talks, however she was only going to agree if the director worked out for her, and that director choice might just be made and would lead to her signing on the dotted line.
The Tourist tells the story of an American tourist who goes undercover for Interpol to entrap a former lover who is suspected of being a criminal on a global scale, and is a remake of the French thriller, Anthony Zimmer.
One of the Filmstalker readers dropped a note about the original film and had a pretty negative view of the film, so maybe there's a case for the remake. You can read that article right here on Filmstalker.
It was just over a week ago we heard that Charlize Theron was off The Tourist and that Angelina Jolie was in talks to take the role, now Variety through Latino Review reveals that this may be dependant on the director coming on board.
That director is Florian Henckel von Donnersmarck, the man who directed Das Leben der Anderen (The Lives of Others), and that is definitely a good sign for the film. However we know only too well that foreign directors coming to Hollywood are often not set to gain the success that they have had making films in their own countries, even when they've done really well in America.
Of course foreign directors who come to Hollywood to remake their own films have even less success, and that's another worrying aspect as on his slate he seems to have The Lives of Others, a remake of his own film that led to Oscar success.
Still, there are those that have made a successful move and with Jolie holding out for von Donnersmarck, with this strong sounding thriller and the chance to remake it correcting some of the mistakes it made, there's a good possibility that he'll pull something off here.
It does sound like the line-up has great potential, I hope it does come to fruition this time.
