True Grit gets Brolin and Damon?

JohnWayne.jpgIt would appear that Matt Damon, Jeff Bridges and Josh Brolin are in talks to appear in the Coen Brothers remake of True Grit, the classic John Wayne film.

Remember though that this isn't a remake of the film, the Coen's are going back to the source book written by Charles Portis (Amazon.co.uk / Amazon.com).

Last we heard was that Jeff Bridges was in talks to play the character once played by the great John Wayne in True Grit.

The original film told the story of a U.S. Marshall who is persuaded by a fourteen year old girl to let her tag along with him to track down her father's killer, but this version will show the story from the girl's point of view, not from Cogburn's, as the original did.

Now, from The Hollywood Reporter we hear that the role once played by Glen Campbell of the Texas Ranger working alongside Cogburn, is set to go to Matt Damon, should he get through the negotiations.

There's no indication of who Josh Brolin is playing, but I would suspect it would be one of the bad guys don't you? Mind you, would he be better for the role of Cogburn? Taking over from John Wayne? Perhaps though that's too close to his No Country for Old Men (Filmstalker review) character, and he would be better suited to flip to the bad guy role.

It sounds good casting indeed, but are these going to be the final roles, and will the novel adaptation give us a better film that True Grit? Well half the audience probably won't even remember that film or John Wayne.
