Avary still on Silent Hill 2
Silent Hill 2 has been on the go for a very long time, and with the recent news that Roger Avary, the man tasked with writing the film, has been sent to prison, it would seem that there's little chance of the film happening.
Well that might not be true as the producer Don Carmondy has been talking about the film and about Avary's involvement.
”Well, we have had a bit of a hiccup with Roger, we're just debating whether we can wait for him. He's writing the script for sure.”
Well I can't make out what he means there. One minute he's saying that they can't wait for Roger Avary and then the next that he's writing the script for sure. Well I assume that means he's writing the script, but the film might go ahead as soon as he hands that script over.
”I think we need to make it a little more accessible to the movie-going public. Silent Hill is not a blockbuster game like Resident Evil or the other games out there. It's a connoisseurs' game. It has its own, rabid fan base.
They're not cheap, these things. You have to appeal not only to the gamers, you have to appeal to a wider audience. So we have to get some story in there that helps explain a bit more. I think that's all happening.
Of course, [the story] is going to happen years later and the main character - without giving too much away - is much older and representative to the movie-going public which is in that age group.”
Now I'm sure fans of Silent Hill can gleam something from that last comment, a much older lead character to mix with the age group of the audience. I'm not sure if I know which direction they'll be looking to take that then, I would presume a teenage audience to get the most exposure for the film, but the age of the audience for the game is somewhat older than that I would think.
Silent Hill 2 might still be a while away, but at least Avary is on the case with the script. The problem will be what direction they take the story from the original film and story.
