Baldwin says his film career is a complete failure
Alec Baldwin has said that he doesn't have any interest in acting anymore and that he's close to giving it up. Not only that but that he considers his entire film career to date to be a complete failure.
I have to ask if he's been smoking something strange, because that's not the Baldwin film career that comes to mind when I think back. Mind you, he does come up with an explanation for why he thinks that, and to a degree he's right.
"I consider my entire movie career a complete failure…The goal of movie-making is to star in a film where your performance drives the film, and the film is either a soaring critical or commercial success, and I never had that."
Well he does have a good point there doesn't he? Has his performance ever driven a film? Well I think The Hunt for Red October is certainly one of those films, after all there are many who believe he was the best Jack Ryan ever, and I know I'm amongst that group.
However in the article in Men's Journal through Reuters and Yahoo News he says that because the film is based on a successful Tom Clancy book he doesn't rate his performance. Now I just don't get that myself, it doesn't matter what the film is based on, if he delivers a great performance he delivers a great performance, and in Hunt for Red October he does just that. He really needs to rewatch that film.
Glengarry Glen Ross, Malice, The Shadow and The Departed (Filmstalker review) are some of the best moments of his career that come to my mind almost immediately, and looking back at his career there are more notable roles. Sure not all of these lead the film, but some of them are film stealing roles, the first and last performances there being the most film stealing of them all and the most powerful of his career without a doubt.
Yes, I know Malice and The Shadow might not be the best films in the world according to a great many people, but I love The Shadow for all it's goofiness and old spirited fun, and Baldwin does give a great performance as the character there, I have a huge fondness for that film and that role.
Seriously, can you see Alec Baldwin's film career as a complete failure? Aren't there some roles you just love him in? Have a look at his career and tell me what your favourite role by the actor is.
