MacGruber trailer shows best of American comedy

MacGruber.jpgThe new red band trailer for MacGruber is online, and it's showing everything that is the best of American comedy - a lead character named after a woman's pubic area, one liners direct from the old Zucker films, and some sexual jokes including a butt and date rape.

There are a few funny moments however, one of the closing scenes when he's looking at the wiring of the nuclear bomb. Mostly though, it's just what I expected, and is definitely not a film I'll be going to see.

The story of MacGruber is one that we've heard before as well, a secret agent who is actually a complete bumbling failure, who'd have guessed? He ends up actually being a danger to those around him.

He actually comes from a character from Saturday Night Live created by Will Forte. Here's some of the blurb:

In the 10 years since his fiancée was killed, special op MacGruber has sworn off a life of fighting crime with his bare hands. But when he learns that his country needs him to find a nuclear warhead that's been stolen by his sworn enemy, Dieter Von Cunth (Val Kilmer), MacGruber figures he's the only one tough enough for the job.

Assembling an elite team of experts--Lt. Dixon Piper (Ryan Phillippe) and Vicki St. Elmo (Kristen Wiig)--MacGruber will navigate an army of assassins to hunt down Cunth and bring him to justice. His methods may be unorthodox. His crime scenes may get messy. But if you want the world saved right, you call in MacGruber.

It also stars Val Kilmer, Kristen Wiig, Ryan Phillippe, Bill Hader and the superb Powers Boothe.

Here's the trailer:

I know there will be people totally excited about the character hitting the big screen, but is there really enough to carry it forward for a full film? Is there really enough to carry it through the comic genre it's trying to hit?
