Sympathy for Mr Vengeance gets Hollywood rewrite

SympathyforMrVengeance.jpgWell if they can't remake Oldboy, how about Sympathy for Mr Vengeance? Do you think that's what Warner Bros. were thinking when they went for this film? Whatever they were thinking, and despite the attempts to remake OldBoy (Filmstalker review) and Sympathy for Lady Vengeance (Filmstalker review) already, Warner Bros. have the rights to the Chan-wook Park film and a script writer actively working on the project.

So that makes three remakes of Park's films on the go in Hollywood, if the other two are really still active of course.

This latest announcement tells us that the studio have the rights to Chan-wook Park's excellent Sympathy for Mr Vengeance and have the script writer Brian Tucker working on a version of the film for Hollywood right now.

Are we going to take guesses at what that will turn out like? Will it get diluted down to a standard revenge film, which wouldn't be unwelcome, but wouldn't be the same story. Sure it is about revenge, or rather vengeance, but it's also so much more and the intricacies are in the writing and the characters, not just the cinematic styling.

The story sees the sister of a deaf and dumb man become very ill, she needs a kidney transplant but the brother's is not compatible. He turns to the black market trade in organs and discovers that for a large sum of money he could get the kidney for her, however he doesn't have the money. His girlfriend, somewhat of a revolutionist, persuades him to kidnap the daughter of the boss of the plant he works at, for they are very rich. However it all goes badly wrong, and there's tragedy, pain, anger, and vengeance.

It's a great story, and cleverly crafted, I wonder if they will try and remain steadfast to the more clever and unique aspects of the story?

The news from Variety is sparse and simply goes into producers and what not, so this won't be the last draft by any means. It still has a long way to go.

There was also the news back in March 2008 that Charlize Theron was looking to put together a remake of Sympathy for Lady Vengeance as well as take the lead, then there's all the talk about Oldboy, which at last count was dead. Chan-wook Park is a busy man indeed.

Update: According to Pajiba it would appear that there's a remake of Park's Thirst just begun, and Thirst was released just last year. So now that's two Vengeance films, Oldboy (if it isn't already dead) and Thirst.
