Bourne to be a prequel? Bourne sequel five years away?
Let's not leap on Matt Damon's words straight away, for I think if you read into them a healthy scepticism about Hollywood you probably get the real picture of what he's saying about the Bourne series and realise that he's more than capable of some sarcasm.
If you don't do that, then the news could well be that there's a prequel to the Bourne series coming, with a younger Bourne just starting out in the elite killer programme.
Of course now that I say it the idea doesn't seem that far fetched actually, and a prequel film telling the story of how Jason Bourne signs up to the programme that creates elite killers, how he progresses, and how he carries out all the missions that he hints upon in the previous Bourne films as his memory returns would make for plenty of sequels to the prequel.
However that's the current Hollywood trend right now, and I can hear Matt Damon saying this with a sly and sarcastic tone, perhaps referring to just how long this next Bourne film is taking. Maybe he said it in response to a sarcastic question of just when are we getting the next Bourne film because it's taking ages?
What did he say? Well Empire cornered him on the red carpet event for Invictus (Filmstalker review) and he said:
"There'll probably be a prequel of some kind with another actor and another director before we do another one…just because I think we're probably another five years away from doing it - we've got to get a script…"
Apparently that comment will "shake us to the very core", ermm, not really I'm afraid, it seems to me quite obvious that this would have been a sarcastic comment at what's happening in Hollywood right now with most franchised characters and to the amount of time that the sequel is taking to put together.
Without a script yet it would seem that five years isn't that far fetched, but it is a long way off.
Still, the idea of a prequel doesn't sound as daft as some of the prequel ideas we've been hearing, although how they could really replace Matt Damon and then still bring him back for a sequel is a little beyond me.
The idea that Matt Damon is being sarcastic is followed through with his last statement. When asked about the plot for the sequel, and how many screenwriters have had a crack, he reveals that they aren't any closer to it:
"If you have any ideas, call Universal…They'd love for you to get in touch!"
Definitely sarcasm and a healthy degree of joking, and if it were true I see it as the end of the Bourne sequels as we know them and the prequel would introduce a new Bourne to continue the franchise.
What do you think? Would you want to see a Bourne prequel while the sequel is thought through, and would a younger actor be able to replace Damon so he could return in a later sequel?
