Will we see another Watchmen film?

Watchmen-Minutemen.jpgI could make this story very short. Yes. Absolutely. However the arguments are leaping about the internet with the rumour coming out about a possible prequel or spin-off to the comic book, the thought has turned to the film.

Views are polarised, and those that are in the know are saying no way, never. I dispute that because there's one very good reason why it would probably be made, no matter how long it would take.

Money. Of course people are talking about the fact that Watchmen (Filmstalker review) didn't perform as well as it could have, but it turned a profit, and there's something very important that will still attract the eyes of any studio, the ready made audience.

This is one of the big reasons why studios remake existing properties, it's as though they started marketing campaigns years before the film and recruited a massive group of people ready to pay money to see their film. It's like a guaranteed profit, and when starting a business it makes the business plan look very attractive, very attractive indeed, especially compared to trying to start attracting customers after you've started selling your product.

So while the insider scoop from Deadline Hollywood Daily may sound very final, and I might well believe that it does come from a close insider, I do question how long this will remain the truth:

”There is no truth to anything related to a movie sequel. Not a chance by a longshot. With regards to the comics, well, I guess anything is possible. I'll keep my opinion to myself as to whether it's a smart idea to do so.”

Well of course the studio aren't considering a sequel at the moment, the idea of a prequel or spin-off is a long way away, and right now it's a rumour of what's inside someone's head, albeit someone senior at DC Comics. For more on that, read the original story of the Watchmen comic prequel/spin-off idea.

If they move forward and create a Watchmen (Filmstalker review) prequel, and if there's an audience out there that take to it, then we'll see the studio turn on this, I'm convinced.

The question as to whether it's a good idea though is another matter. I think there might be mileage in a Minutemen prequel, even a pre-Keane act Watchmen, but no more.
