Alien prequel trilogy in 3D?

Alien.jpgOkay, calm down everyone. While the story is going around that Ridley Scott is going to be shooting a trilogy of Alien films in 3D starting with the upcoming prequel, I think we better look at the source of the story and take a few deep breaths before we leap at the idea.

The story isn't as clear cut as some would have and there's a long, long way to go before we actually find out if the Alien prequel is going to be in 3D, and indeed if there's going to be a trilogy. Yet there's talk, and it sets the tone well for the prequel.

So far the commentary comes from the art director Roger Christian, who isn't actually yet on the project officially, however he's been talking to Ridley Scott about the film and it's through these comments that we hear something rather exciting about the film.

It seems that Christian met Ridley Scott recently at a film festival and discussed the first film and the new prequel, it seems that Scott respects Christian and how much he managed to get hold of the first film and his work on it, and there's a suggestion that he'll be involved in the next one.

However it's his comments about the next film and Scott's understanding of the franchise that's the interesting part, and ShadowLocked through /Film and First Showing have the comments.

"Ridley told me some of his ideas when we were here in Toronto. He has a very clear understanding of where this should go. They kind of stopped dead one of the greatest horror franchises there's ever been, and it had legs to go on. So I'm hoping he'll revive another three. The world certainly wants it, and the fans want it - everybody."

Okay, so it's clear that it's just Christian's belief that there's going to be another trilogy, in fact just his hopes that he'll do another three, who knows? Scott certainly doesn't seem to have said so to him.

When he says that Scott has a clear understanding of the franchise and where it should go, a direction that he suggests the franchise was already going in anyway, I'm starting to think really hopefully about the film. Could Ridley Scott be taking this in a direction that fits in perfectly well with the original films and will do a lot of work to destroy what the AvP sequels did? Let's hope so, and it sounds as though Roger Christian is convinced.

Still, it's the one statement that strikes fear into my heart when mentioned with a film these days, and we're hearing more and more films going in this direction (Green Lantern and Sucker Punch to mention two revealed today), and I have to say I'm disappointed to hear that Scott is planning it for the Alien prequel, Christian stated:

"Ridley's doing the next Alien in 3D."

Oh dear. I am concerned. Except I do have the hope that Ridley Scott was talking about the Avatar (Filmstalker review) style of 3D and not the cheap kind that we see in the cinema, or at least I'm hoping so.

Yet the idea of chest bursting aliens leaping at the screen repels me.

With that though, I do have the belief that if Ridley Scott can find the old Alien inside him, then we could return to the great strength of the franchise. So far, all we know is that he's on the prequel and that it might be 3D, but a trilogy seems a long way off.
