Cody talks female anti-hero stalker film
While Diablo Cody is writing her next project, the studio friendly updated version of Sweet Valley High, she's revealed that she's working on another original project, something that the studios will be in two minds about considering her last script was Jennifer's Body.
The film sounds really interesting, the idea of a female anti-hero whom she compares to the comeback of Mickey Rourke in The Wrestler, so already I'm thinking this could be a good script, but would it make a good film?
Jennifer's Body is a film that really does make you wonder if Diablo Cody is a great writer and perhaps that film was badly handled, or if she just captured something with Juno that evaded her on her follow-up.
Opinions are divided on that one, and I like to think that she is a strong writer, it's just that she really got a raw deal from the previous film and perhaps that has a lot to do with casting and media more than anything, after all you have to bear in mind what kind of story she was creating.
So what's this new idea all about?
"…a movie about a woman who's stalking her high-school sweetheart…It has elements of humor, but it's pretty serious and fucked up. You don't get to see women be antiheroes that often, where it's like somebody like Mickey Rourke, who gets a comeback in 'The Wrestler.' It's rarer that you'll have a studio say, 'Let's have an actress come back and be ugly!"
Wow, that does sound interesting, but there is the difficulty of selling a studio on the script, or getting it made independently and on the cheap. However it's the last section of the comment she makes to New York Magazine through The Playlist that caught my attention the most.
It suggests that the script would be looking for an older actress coming back and doing a pretty much against type role that would be expected to redefine her career. Think something like Robin Wright Penn coming back for a role as an anti-heroine who is also a stalker. Now that would be an interesting role for her, something very different.
However that's just a name that popped into my head when I imagined a stark comparison of actress with role. Can you think of a better, or stranger, casting choice? Will the film ever get made considering how Jennifer's Body was received? Perhaps Sweet Valley High will bring her back in favour?
