Downey Jr. as Wizard of Oz?

RobertDowneyJr.jpgIt does sound bizarre indeed, the idea of Robert Downey Jr. playing the Wizard of Oz in a prequel to the original film, one that sees the wizard arrive in Oz, and what's more is that the director that's being touted for the job is Sam Mendes.

Why not? He's not got a Bond film to make, and we've just seen a number of Alice in Wonderland inspired films appear from the low to high budget, so why not the same for some Oz stories?

There are a number that have been under development for a while, including one from the writer Josh Olson that sees Dorothy's granddaughter appearing in Oz to do similar good deeds to her grandmother, except it's said to be much darker than the original. That's been going on for some time though, and there's not been a lot of movement, so maybe this news will kick start it.

Mind you, Oz The Great And Powerful sounds a much more interesting and less contrived idea, with the story looking at how the wizard arrived in Oz rather than some relative of Dorothy's returning for more of the same.

If it is true we're looking at Robert Downey Jr. playing the wizard and Sam Mendes directing, if the negotiations come through. The story comes from a Production Weekly Twitter through JoBlo:

”Sam Mendes is the front runner to direct "Oz The Great And Powerful" by Mitchell Kapner, with Robert Downey, Jr. circling to play the Wizard”

Well there is no Bond, so maybe Mendes has enough spare time to pick this up. I don't know about you though, it just feels a little off.
