Stonewall trailer online
In 1969 the Greenwich Village Stonewall Inn was continually raided and men roughly thrown into paddy wagons to be taken off to jail. Why? They were gay and the Inn was a notorious gay bar. It was during a time when homosexuality was illegal in America and homosexuals were hounded.
However one night when the police came, the people in the bar decided not to go easily and protest the crimes against them. It started a three day riot that is marked as the start of the gay rights movement. The events are revisited in the Stonewall film and interviews people who were there, including a policeman who led the raid.
It was an unbelievable time homosexuals had to live in, as shown by the opening of the trailer, shocking indeed but then it was a time when homosexuality was deemed a mental illness solved by aversion therapy and public service announcements warned young people to watch out for predatory homosexuals.
Here's a bit of the blurb for Stonewall:
A treasure-trove of archival footage gives life to this all-too-recent reality, a time when Mike Wallace announced on a 1966 CBS Reports: "The average homosexual, if there be such, is promiscuous. He is not interested in, nor capable of, a lasting relationship like that of a heterosexual marriage." At the height of this oppression, the cops raid Stonewall, triggering nights of pandemonium with tear gas, billy clubs and a small army of tactical police.
Now, here's the trailer. This is a documentary that really should be seen, and alongside the film Milk (Filmstalker review). These were dangerous times for civil liberties, and some parts of America haven't come that far from those times, indeed some parts of the world are still there.
