xXx 3 in 3D

xXx.jpgWell, it looks like everything's going 3D, even the return of xXx with Vin Diesel as Xander Cage. The big surprise is that Rob Cohen is set to direct, again.

They aren't the only two coming back for the revival, according to rumours the busiest actor ever, Samuel L. Jackson is set to return to the series once more.

I'm surprised that Rob Cohen is returning, because he was off to make Medieval, but then that fell through for what's being termed conveniently as logistical issues, perhaps the budget was just getting too big. Whatever the reason that film is over and Cohen is returning to xXx.

With that, Deadline Hollywood Daily is telling us that Samuel L. Jackson is also set to return and that the plot will see Xander Cage escape near death, probably that death that Rob Cohen filmed for the DVD to kill off the Vin Diesel character to allow for Ice Cube to take over.

They delve into the reasons behind why Medieval shut down, and while the official reason is that they were going to shoot in Dubrovnik but when they wanted to shoot it they discovered it was filled with tourists, so they halted production. What? Couldn't they just choose another date? Filming happens in busy cities all the time all over the world, why is it suddenly an issues that they can't film here? To me that sounds like budgets.

However the new xXx film hasn't had it easy either, it seems that Columbia has dropped out of the production and Paramount are in negotiations to take over the franchise. Cohen thinks that's a good thing for the film.

”I left the project because I had a very strong instinct it would never get made at Sony, that it wasn't picking up the critical mass and traction that a movie needs. I got along very well with everybody there, from top to bottom, but in these recession times, you make your picks carefully and it always comes down to judgment calls based on taste and the objectives you're trying to meet for the studio. For whatever reason, Paramount sees the future of this, and we're in a very positive place at a new home where there is genuine enthusiasm.”

He certainly seems happy about it all, Now he's shooting the first 3D advertisement for Coke, preparing for his foray into the 3D world of xXx.

”With the new 3D instrument and the techniques I can apply, we can create a different kind of cutting-edge experience in 3D by shooting it that way from the beginning the way James Cameron did Avatar. This won't be fantasy characters, it takes place on Earth in real time. That's a new dimension to be explored, and I'm excited.”

It's great that he's talking about approaching it the same way that Avatar (Filmstalker review) did, using it as a component of the film, another layer to build up the film rather than gearing everything around it.

Actually I'll correct myself, he's not saying that at all. He's saying he'll film it from the beginning in 3D, that's all. I would hope he applies the same view to the film as Avatar did, but I don't know if he'll have that luxury, I suspect he's going to go all out for the 3D and have explosions and flying action stars right at the camera.
