Lohan is pornstar Linda Lovelace
Lindsay Lohan has finally agreed to play Linda Lovelace, the woman at the centre of the controversial adult film, Deep Throat, a woman once rumoured to be played by Anna Faris which, in my mind, would have been a great career move.
With Lohan it's sink or swim, and it could prove just too late for her career. After all we've heard reports of her being fired, unpredictability on productions, and there's the quality of her films to consider.
“It's a really deep, dark drama…This would be incredibly intense…It would be the most difficult thing I've done, and I'm really nervous...It's a pretty tragic story...It's going to be a challenge, definitely.
...We've yet to find Linda's husband...That's sort of our hang-up right now....”
Then again in June 2008 she reiterated that the project was happening:
We’re still trying to put it together. I’m going to do ['Observe & Report' with Seth Rogen] first, and then hopefully we’ll get together for the summer.I think we’re still working on the money bit.
And for those of us wondering if she has the acting skills to pull it off:
You’re not going to even know who I am. I’m not there right now, but I will be when the time comes. I’ll be in a very dark place.
However come September 2008 she had decided that the project was too dark for her and she would return to half hearted comedy such as The Scary Movie House Bunny, or some such drivel. I really viewed that as a shame for her as I'd seen glimpses of a strong actress in her, and this kind of role for an actress like her usually spells career turnaround.
Not to be however, and with the film still heading to production, they've chosen none other than Lindsay Lohan to play the lead. Surprising, cashing in on her career, or a cheap and easy option willing to do pretty much anything to get a decent role?
I'm not sure which way it is right now, but it's clear her career isn't in the best of places.
Linda Lovelace leaped to the fore when she appeared in the 1972 porn film Deep Throat and raised a controversy when there were claims that she was forced into some of the acts and appearing in the film, and generally abused, counter claims were thrown and everything became very messy and uncertain.
She went on to become an outspoken anti-pornography campaigner and although she kept using the name Linda Lovelace to promote her books, etc. She continually denied the use of it...except for promotion that is, and died in a car accident in 2002.
The events of the film and her involvement were covered in the documentary Inside Deep Throat in 2005, along with all the claims of everything from abuse to Mafia involvement.
”We've all thought that Lindsay would be a great choice for a while now, and we're all convinced that she is going to do it...For at least a year, the director [Matthew Wilder] and I have gone back and forth imagining how awesome of a performance she could give if she was in the movie.”
Well, the certainly hold her in high praise. Of course there's no real mention of just how far this biographical film will go, whether it will portray everything the adult star engaged in during the film, or if it will turn out a Boogie Nights style view of the filming sets of films such as Deep Throat.
My guess is that there won't be any full on sexual acts for Lohan to engage in as part of the film, it will try and remain as mainstream as possible and therefore we'll see everything hidden from view with the actress staying just that, an actress.
However the producer does hint at the sexual content, but says that the real tough part of playing the role is the emotional side of it.
”I would say it's probably one of the most challenging roles any actor could play -- and not because of the sexual content, necessarily -- but more because she was so battered and beat up emotionally, that I think it’s gonna take everything Lindsay has to really be able to pull it off...”
There's no doubt that this would be a big coup for Lindsay Lohan if she did manage to pull it off (come on you innuendo people, give us a snigger) but then I have some serious doubts considering her past performances on and off the set.
That's not something that bothers the producer though, he says that if her behaviour were a concern of theirs they wouldn't have been chasing after her for the role for so long. Mind you, controversy is always great publicity too.
It's not just Lohan cast in Inferno though, Bill Pullman is set to play Hugh Hefner, and that's a piece of casting that does scream drama over adult content, as well as suggesting that this could be a more serious attempt at bringing forward a strong performance from Lohan.
It's not the only Lovelace film on the go though, back in January I wrote about Rob Epstein and Jeffrey Friedman directing a film that was written by W. Merritt Johnson and drew on Eric Danville's biographical novel The Complete Linda Lovelace, called Lovelace. This film was going to look at the life of Linda Lovelace through three interviews and the words of the interviewees, telling the whole story of her turbulent life.
One is a documentary and the other a biographical film, with the latter having more leeway for dramatic interpretation, however it will be interesting to see which comes out on top, and which portrays the more balanced and open view of the woman's life. For it would be so easy to create a questioning and judgemental film.
Still, Lindsay Lohan?
