Sharlto Copley's Spoon teaser
Sharlto Copley is now known for District 9 (Filmstalker review)and the upcoming The A-Team film, but before he hit that level of fame he was going to be working behind the camera with his production partner Simon Hansen. Well now with his new found fame his behind the camera work is going to get more focus, and so when a teaser trailer comes out for his first film featuring Rutger Hauer, we all sit up and take notice.
The teaser looks interesting, but really it's only because of the fact that Hauer is speaking directly to us and that he's in a straight jacket. There's some interest in the fact that Copley is directing it, but since we've not seen anything from him I have to sway to the Hauer appearance.
Of course there are also some hidden fast cut scenes at the end of the teaser which might intrigue, but the source I have currently for the trailer isn't very good at slow-motion through the footage and so I haven't been able to pause it just yet.
Alive In Joburg is the film that Neill Blomkamp made before District 9, just a short film to grab people's attention, and both Sharlto Copley and Simon Hansen are credited as producers and, according to the Twitch story, were heavily involved in the effects work too. Hansen also directed the interview segments for District 9.
Now they've headed off and made their own film called Spoon, which is described as:
”...thriller with supernatural overtones about a man with a medical condition that causes him to black out during moments of extreme stress and leads him to make a remarkable discovery about himself...”
Spoon stars the very recognisable Darren Boyd and Rutger Hauer, with Boyd playing Daniel Spoon and Hauer his father Victor. Not much else to go on, and interestingly the film is credited with a date of 2008 on IMDB, I wonder if that's when it was started, for this is apparently the first look at the teaser trailer.
