The Experiment trailer and shocking news
For those of you who haven't seen the German film Das Experiment I urge you to right now. Consider yourself urged. It's a fantastic film in which the excellent Moritz Bleibtreu and Christian Berkel star. Hollywood decided to remake it in The Experiment, starring Adrien Brody, Forest Whitaker, Cam Gigandet, Clifton Collins Jr. and Maggie Grace, and directed by Prison Break's Paul T. Scheuring. It had all the signs of being a good film.
Turns out that's not the case and it's heading straight to DVD.
The story is based on an actual experiment that really did happen, where twenty-six men were selected to play the roles of guards and prisoners in a study of psychological behaviour and what affect the commands of authority had on the individual and the group.
Das Experiment took the story of the actual experiment, which was closed quickly when aggressive tendencies began to show in some of the participants, and let it run out to a more cinematic conclusion. It was a superb film, well acted and well written, and makes it to my top foreign film list.
Although I expected The Experiment to play out the same, I was excited by the list of names on the project, some great names to be honest, however the fact that it's going direct to DVD is very disappointing.
Have a look at the trailer and see what you think, it seems to be pretty good. From this I can't see why it wouldn't be going into cinemas. Maybe because it's not 3D, or maybe it's too violent? After all it is getting an R rating.
Actually the more I think about it the more it might be that R rating. Films with a restricted rating such as this tend to get a very limited run in American cinemas because they don't want to carry them. I'm not sure if that's down to the possibility of complaints, or that they don't think people will come and see them, but it might be a driving factor for the film. Maybe it's not so bad after all?
