Bong Joon-ho turns Hollywood with Abrams?

BongJoon-ho.jpgThere's a rumour that Bong Joon-ho is heading to Hollywood and is set to direct a new film which J.J. Abrams would produce. It's an interesting rumour, but I'm sceptical about Bong arriving in Hollywood and pulling off a good film, it's not as if foreign directors have a good track record in pulling that off.

It's an interesting rumour though, and the combination of Abrams and Bong suggests a pretty unique project. Abrams is a producer that likes to get involved and could well ensure that Bong doesn't get eaten up by Hollywood.

The rumour comes from one of those pesky sources, so expect it to be debunked, but it does intrigue, the combination of Bong Joon-ho directing and J.J. Abrams producing, but the question would be what the film is and who wrote the script?

So far there's nothing on that rumour from the source that /Film has, and it is an unconfirmed rumour, but their source suggests that J.J. Abrams met with Bong Joon-ho in Korea last year (saying that does ring a bell somewhere about a story I heard a while back) and that after his current film he's set to head to Hollywood.

I don't know though, we've talked about how The Host (Gwoemul) (Filmstalker review) was being remade in Hollywood and I've been sceptical about how that would turn out and if it would ever work, but then taking a look at his film Memories of Murder and you could see that working as a remake. It's not as if we're talking about Park Chan-wook whose films would really struggle to make it as remakes in Hollywood, I mean look at Oldboy's journey.

I think Bong is a much closer to Hollywood and could make a film there much easier and without so many limitations as someone like Park would.

Still, we've seen a lot of foreign, and in particular Asian directors struggle to make the transition, or rather for Hollywood to struggle to allow the director to make their film rather than to make a Hollywood film.

It's an interesting rumour, but remember it's just that. If it does turn out to be true a writer would give us more indication of where this project would be going.
