Piranha 3D sequel already?
The accountants have revealed that Piranha 3D brought in some US $10 million at the U.S. box office and so there's going to be a sequel. No idea if Alexandre Aja will return to direct, no idea if the stars want to return and no idea about any script.
Of course they have the producer armed with the spreadsheets to show the returns, and so a sequel there will be.
"We are thrilled that audiences are not just loving 'Piranha 3D,' but cheering for it...And it's fantastic that so many critics are really getting the movie and recommending it. We can't wait to get to work on the sequel."
Although I haven't seen the film yet I wholeheartedly believe that the success of the film is down to Alexandre Aja. He wrote and directed Switchblade Romance (Haute tension) (Filmstalker review) and The Hills Have Eyes (Filmstalker review), both being excellent horror films and The Hills Have Eyes being an excellent remake. Without a doubt Aja has a talent for horror and it looks like for remaking them too.
So take Aja away from the sequel of the remake and I think you have a simple case of a direct to DVD/Blu-ray.
The remake is coming in to strong reviews and that's in no small part down to Aja and the fact that the film doesn't try to pretend to be anything it isn't, a damn good fun horror film with ladies in bikinis and men in tight shorts getting eaten by killer fish.
Have you seen Piranha 3D? Do you think that there can be a sequel without it turning into a cheap direct to DVD/Blu-ray? Can it be made without Aja?
