True Grit trailer online
Some of us thought we'd never see the day, a John Wayne film being remade, but to be fair this isn't so much a remake of the John Wayne film as a new version of the original story from Charles Portis novel (Amazon.co.uk / Amazon.com).
However different the film version was from the original text, John Wayne delivered an iconic performance and character, and trying to better that is a daunting task, something that Jeff Bridges has taken on, and judging from the trailer there's a lot of that film character in there.
However, it's a series of shots in a trailer, the stories are going to be nigh on identical and the lead character of Marshal Reuben J. Cogburn is going to feel similar no matter the original text was, because comparisons with the original film are impossible to avoid.
You can especially see that in the meeting between Cogburn and Mattie Ross and the exchange of words, which reminds me so much of the original True Grit film.
That said the trailer looks like it's carving some new ground, and while Jeff Bridges might not say much, he does look much meaner and there's a slightly tougher feel to it all. I'm thinking from what Joel and Ethan Coen have delivered before that this is going to be a realistic, tough, and hardy version of True Grit, and to be fair the original isn't too far off that either.
One thing that this version does promise to do is keep the focus from the point of view of the character of the young girl. Here's the blurb for True Grit:
Fourteen-year-old Mattie Ross's (Hailee Steinfeld) father has been shot in cold blood by the coward Tom Chaney (Josh Brolin), and she is determined to bring him to justice. Enlisting the help of a trigger-happy, drunken U.S. Marshal, Rooster Cogburn (Jeff Bridges), she sets out with him -- over his objections -- to hunt down Chaney. Her father's blood demands that she pursue the criminal into Indian territory and find him before a Texas Ranger named LeBoeuf (Matt Damon) catches him and brings him back to Texas for the murder of another man.
Apart from Bridges taking up the John Wayne role there's also Matt Damon playing a character called, would you believe, La Boeuf. No Shia in there though. It also stars Josh Brolin, Barry Pepper and of course Hailee Steinfeld as the lead character and voice Mattie Ross.
