Great Gatsby remake with DiCaprio?
Baz Luhrmann talked about a remake of The Great Gatsby back in December of 2008 soon after he acquired the rights to the story and he was talking about moving fast on the rights, something that hasn't really happened, but there's now some rumours appearing about casting on the film.
They're big rumours with Leonardo DiCaprio, Tobey Maguire, and Amanda Seyfried all being rumoured to be starring in the film, although the rumours are far from fact it would seem.
Mind you, saying that even the rebuttal of the rumours are rumours too, so there's still nothing concrete, but it's coming and it looks like Baz Luhrmann is pushing his adaptation of the F. Scott Fitzgerald novel (Amazon.co.uk / Amazon.com).
Previously I wrote about Luhrmann acquiring the rights and planning to make the film, he said at the time that it was a great parallel to the recent hard times a lot of the world have hit:
“If you wanted to show a mirror to people that says, 'You've been drunk on money,' they're not going to want to see it. But if you reflected that mirror on another time they'd be willing to...
...People will need an explanation of where we are and where we've been, and 'The Great Gatsby' can provide that explanation.”
The rumours that came out last week, and rumours they were indeed, were that Leonardo DiCaprio was set to play the lead Jay Gatsby who was originally played by Robert Redford in the original The Great Gatsby, Tobey Maguire is indeed, according to the story in Deadline Hollywood Daily, in the running for the role of Nick Carraway which was originally played by Sam Waterston, the narrator of the film and they say that Luhrmann has him at the top of his wish-list. It also says that the rumours of Amanda Seyfried playing the role of Daisy, originally played by Mia Farrow, are in fact false and that Luhrmann has revealed to them that the casting for that is wide open.
So with that it sounds like full steam ahead? I'm afraid not. As always the clues are in the wording of these “announcements”, rumours,“insiders” and so on. Here it seems that only Leonardo DiCaprio has been attached and no one else has even been approached.
So rumours blasted, but it would appear, if the latest article is right, that DiCaprio has the option to say yes to play the leading role of Gatsby if the film gets made, and perhaps we'll see an offer extended to Maguire in the future.
I'm not going to speculate on this one about the latest hottest actors young or old because I think it's as wide open as anything and with Baz Luhrmann remaking it we could see the film changing in any imaginable way.
How about you? Could you cast it?
