Thriller to be turned into a film?
It seems that the Michael Jackson classic Thriller is going to be made into a film, as GK Films are in negotiations to get the rights to allow them to take the story from the video and turn it into a film.
It seems rather strange if you ask me, why they would need the rights to make a film like that, why not just “re-imagine” the idea? It also strikes me that as soon as you take out the Michael Jackson video aspect it just becomes a pretty standard film, doesn't it?
Kenny Ortega is already attached to direct the film which isn't a great surprise really considering that he directed This Is It from the footage of Michael Jackson rehearsing for his last tour. He has the writer Jeremy Garelick, who wrote The Break-Up, writing the screenplay for the film, that is if they can get the rights.
Deadline Hollywood Daily through FirstShowing have the story but they do point out that the plot is being kept under wraps. So what could it be? DHD believe that it's about the folklore behind the music video and song, featuring closely on the dialogue from Vincent Price and the town that his character grew up in.
So let's think about this for a moment. If it's based on the video and the story that Price tells in the song, then we're looking at at town overrun by zombies and perhaps a man who can change into a werewolf taking them all on and trying to kill them. Maybe that's a little too literal, I'm repeating the Price monologue, which I know by heart, in my head and there's nothing standing out too much.
”Darkness falls across the land,
The midnight hour is close at hand,
Creatures crawl in search of blood,
To terrorise y'awls neighbourhood,
And whosoever shall be found,
Without the soul for getting down,
Must stand and face the hounds of hell,
And rot inside a corpses shell.
The foulest stench is in the air,
The funk of forty thousand years,
And grizzy ghouls from every tomb,
Are closing in to seal your doom,
And though you fight to stay alive,
Your body starts to shiver,
For no mere mortal can resist,
The evil of the thriller.”
Well? Zombies taking over the town, one man who turns into a werewolf at full moon, and Price telling you everyone's turning into zombies and going to hell if you can't dance. I bet it's a 3D musical horror about a zombie invasion! Now, actually...
Seriously though, take away the music and the Michael Jackson spectacle and what does it become? A simple horror story. So why are they after the rights so much? The name of Michael Jackson above the film will make it sell, especially if they get the song rights too.
