Cruise handing Mission: Impossible over?

TomCruise.jpgThere's been a lot of rumour about Mission: Impossible - Ghost Protocol, all of which so far has either not come true or turned out to be false. Indeed so far we've only really seen the title change and there's the suggestion that this film isn't following the timeline of the previous.

That said, there's a new rumour on the go that suggests that this could be Tom Cruise's last, or next to last, outing in the Mission: Impossible franchise, and that he could be handing over to one of his co-stars. So is it true?

There's been talk of the entire franchise being ripped apart already, see Mission: Impossible IV and a recent feature on Mission: Impossible IV without Cruise?. The rumours have ranged from Tom Cruise not returning to the agency not being there and this just being another spy thriller, to his character being in a team of agents and not the lead, to...it went on. However so far we've heard that some of the original names are returning, it is a Mission: Impossible story, and that Tom Cruise is starring, albeit alongside Jeremy Renner, but then hasn't he always been starring with a cast of big talent?

Now the latest rumour to hit is that Cruise could be handing the franchise over to someone else, and that someone could be Renner.

He's suitably coy about it, but there are enough hints to make you think it's a possibility and that it's been discussed. Speaking through MTV Movies Blog and JoBlo he says:

"It's a franchise to potentially take over...I can't predict the future and what they want, but that's certainly the idea."

Okay, bit of deciphering and standing back of the manic media types clambering for a story and we could read into that the simple fact that we all recognise that this is a franchise that could outlast the leading actor and easily be handed over. The whole story is set-up like that, it is after all an agency full of agents. It's also a safe bet to say that at some point the studio will consider this, and after Cruise has left there will be a good few meetings about restarting the franchise with someone else, after all that's what Hollywood is all about. No excitement there yet.

He then declines to mention whether a hand-off is in the script or if it's something that could be in a future sequel - that's almost a direct quote from the article, so he's not said anything about that...and exhale. He actually follows with a quote:

"It's Tom's baby. He's the engine behind the thing. What happens after that, we'll see."

Well obviously. We don't know what's going to happen in the future sequels, and at some point Cruise will leave the franchise, that's clear, age is a factor and he may well want to retire sometime.

The title of the article is "Jeremy Renner Confirms He's Being Groomed To Take Over 'Mission: Impossible' Franchise". Well I don't know where they get that from the story or Renner's comments, but it sounds far from that.

Okay there is one quote which could suggest it:

"It's a franchise to potentially take over...I can't predict the future and what they want, but that's certainly the idea."

Well of course, and for all the reasons I've already stated. Cruise will leave at some point, the franchise know it's a great action name and the story allows for the agent to be replaced, so why not keep it going?

Sure there's perhaps been a conversation about it, but it doesn't sound like it's happening in this film. Why isn't he talking about the script? Well because they're kept under wraps aren't they?

mi2 has been the highlight of the series so far...
