Underworld 4 goes Swedish
Hollywood is a sucker for trends, and where one studio goes many others follow, but you can't really believe that it's a current phase of Hollywood to turn to Sweden for talent that sees the directors of Underworld 4 come from Sweden. Surely you have to believe it's about the talent and the capability.
Now the directors Måns Mårlind and Björn Stein, who have one Swedish and one English language film behind them, have been snapped up to direct Underworld 4.
Måns Mårlind and Björn Stein have directed a few television series but have only directed two feature films, one Swedish film called Storm and another English language called Shelter with the excellent leads of Julianne Moore and Jonathan Rhys Meyers.
The English language version gets some mixed reviews, as does Storm, but The Hollywood Reporter Heat Vision is keen to tell us that they have been selected to direct the fourth film and to herald the return of Kate Beckinsale to the world of tight leather.
John Hlavin is the man credited by the article with writing the script for Underworld 4, a man who wrote for television series The Shield, and apparently it went through revisions by J. Michael Straczynski, now that sounds promising.
I don't really know enough about the directors to know if this is a good or bad move for the Underworld franchise, and I haven't seen either Storm or Shelter, but there's a lot riding on this fourth film, indeed there's been talk of the franchise continuing after this one if the fourth film works out. The question will be if the two directors can carry it forward, perhaps turning in a slightly different direction, and not get gobbled up by Hollywood.
